Money to Carry

When traveling in Bhutan, the official currency used is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). Indian Rupees (INR) are also widely accepted in Bhutan, especially in the border regions and towns. However, it's recommended to have Bhutanese Ngultrum for your transactions within the country, especially in more remote areas or when visiting cultural sites and attractions.

You can exchange your currency for Ngultrum at banks and authorized exchange centres in Bhutan.

Credit Card Acceptance: Credit cards, especially Visa and MasterCard, are accepted in some larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in the major cities of Bhutan, such as Thimphu and Paro. However, it's important to note that credit card acceptance is not as widespread as in many other countries. In smaller towns and rural areas, you may find that cash is the primary form of payment. It's advisable to carry sufficient local currency (Bhutanese Ngultrum) for your expenses, particularly when traveling to remote regions.

ATM Availability: Bhutan has a limited number of ATMs, and they are primarily concentrated in the larger cities and towns like Thimphu and Paro. In more remote areas, you may not find ATMs readily available. Additionally, some ATMs in Bhutan may not accept foreign cards. Therefore, it's important to carry an adequate amount of cash with you, especially when venturing outside urban areas. Be prepared for the possibility of limited ATM access, and plan your cash needs accordingly.

Medical Facility

There are medical facilities (First Aid) available but we suggest carrying your own first aid kit and personal medicines as well. Also consult with the family Doctor before coming on our tour.

PARO - THIMPHU

Following a nourishing breakfast, our team will embark on a bicycle journey to Thimphu. As you make your way towards Thimphu, we'll make a captivating stop at Tachog Lhakhang. Tachog Lhakhang, also known as Tachogang, comes into view just before reaching Chhuzom, after passing through Isuna village. Nestled at the base of a mountain along the Paro-Thimphu highway, this sacred site is a sight to behold. To access the temple, you'll need to cross the Paro River (Pachhu) via a bridge constructed with intricate iron chains. Tachogang, which translates to the "temple of the hill of excellent horse," was erected in the 14th century by Thangtong Gyalpo. His inspiration to build this temple came from a profound vision of the spiritual horse Balaha, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, which he encountered during meditation. Legend has it that this divine encounter led to the establishment of the temple, along with one of his renowned iron bridges. The original bridge was swept away by floods in 1969, but in 2005, a traditional-style bridge with iron chains was meticulously restored. Thangtong Gyalpo, a revered architect, is celebrated for crafting 108 iron bridges across Tibet and Bhutan. Notably, Tachog Lhakhang is now privately maintained by Thangtong Gyalpo's descendants. This intriguing stop at Tachog Lhakhang offers a glimpse into Bhutan's rich cultural and spiritual heritage, making it a remarkable addition to your journey to Thimphu. Punakha Dzong, often referred to as the "Palace of Great Happiness," was strategically chosen as its location by Bhutan's visionary founder, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. It holds the distinction of being the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. This dzong is an integral part of the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Buddhism in Bhutan. The magnificence of Punakha Dzong is a testament to Bhutanese architectural mastery and exquisite craftsmanship, which has garnered global recognition. In fact, Bhutanese architectural elements have inspired designs around the world, including the layout of an entire university campus, such as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in the United States. Punakha Dzong stands as one of the most beautiful and frequently visited dzongs in Bhutan, making it a highlight for travellers. En route to Punakha, your journey will take you over the scenic Dochu La pass, where, in 2003, 108 stupas were erected to commemorate a significant victory over adversaries in southern Bhutan. The Divine Madman, a Buddhist monk known for his unconventional ways, had a fondness for both alcohol and the company of women. Today, Chimi Lhakhang is a temple that focuses on fertility, and childless couples visit here seeking blessings to enhance their chances of conceiving. As you walk from the town to the temple, you'll encounter buildings adorned with giant phalluses and shops selling phallic souvenirs, a unique cultural experience that can spark intriguing conversations, particularly if you're traveling with children. Inside the temple, you'll have the option to receive blessings in the form of a bow and arrow and a foot-long wooden phallus, symbolizing good luck and protection from malevolent spirits.
